one down...
...two to go...
I feel like there are three big hurdles in Brooke's life right now. Three "big girl" hurdles. These are getting rid of her pacifier, being potty trained and moving to a big girl bed.
We have tried the potty training thing off and on for a while now, but haven't had much progress. I am mad that I didn't try this with her sooner, as I think she was really ready to start this summer. I was pregnant and uncomfortable and really busy, and thought she'd probably regress when the baby got here, so I kept pushing it back. Big mistake. I'm definitely busier now than I've ever been! She talks all of the time about going on the potty, but doesn't stay long enough to actually produce results. I know that if I devoted some regular time to this we would probably see progress. We'll see when that happens! I mean, she did just turn two, I'm not nervous YET that she'll be five and still in diapers! I'll worry about that later.
BUT...we have also been talking with Brooke about how big girls don't have pacifiers. She only has her pacis when she is sleeping, they stay in her crib, but she LOVES them. I mean, she will beg to go play in her crib and read books so that she can have her pacifiers.
Recently I noticed her front teeth starting to stick out, probably because of the pacis. We decided to just see what she would say if we asked her to give them to Hailey. She kept saying "give my pacis to baby Hailey?" So, we brought Hailey in and Brooke "handed" them over!
We have gone two nights now without them. She usually cries a lot when we first put her in the crib, but eventually falls asleep and sleeps all night. Hurray! BUT...I am sitting here typing as she is playing in her crib and NOT taking a nap for the second day in a row. Sigh. That is not fun, especially since I haven't been sleeping well at all lately and could really use a nap.
So, maybe we've conquered the pacifier issue, maybe not. At least it is a start, but let's hope that she eventually learns to nap without them. I'm not ready for her to give up naps yet...yikes!
If anyone out there has any wisdom about weaning kids from pacifiers, I'd love to hear it!
Now on to the potty training...and I think we'll leave her in the crib as long as possible! The big girl bed can wait. :)
Here is Brooke at about 3.5 months old (the same age Hailey is now) snoozing with her paci...

We pulled the plug on Jenna just before she turned two. She was going to be a flowergirl in my sister's wedding and I just didn't want to have to deal with it. We didn't do anything fancy. We went cold turkey. She cried for about a week, we were all exhausted, but we did it. :)As far as potty training Jenna wasn't trained until after 3. I was nervous that she would be the first kindergartener not potty trained, but one day at about 38 months she was sitting on the potty and I saw something click. That was it. I think because she was so old it helped. I wouldnn't push it if I were you. Even if you think she's ready you both have to be ready for it to work.
my parents never rid me of my paci until i went to school and i sucked my thumb for WAY too long after that and ruined my teeth. way to go on getting rid of that paci! endure, carrie - it's gotta be worth it in the long term...as long as you're sleeping again soon.
